Know Before You Go
1. Best Times to Visit: April to June and September to October are ideal for visiting Rome. Expect sunny days, fewer crowds, and dreamy golden hour light. If possible try to avoid August – it’s hot, and many locals head out of town.
2. Walk, walk, walk. Rome is best explored on foot, and you’ll stumble across fountains, ruins, and churches that aren’t in any guidebook.
3. Book Attractions and Tours in Advance. The Colosseum, Vatican Museums, and Borghese Gallery can sell out days (sometimes weeks) ahead. Buy skip-the-line tickets or guided tours online to avoid long waits and disappointment.
4. Travel Smart, be Mindful of Pickpockets. Tourist areas (Colosseum, Termini Station, Trevi Fountain) are pickpocket hotspots. Keep your bag zipped, wear a crossbody, and avoid keeping your phone or wallet in your back pocket.
Cuisine and Restaurants
In my very humble opinion, Italy has some of the best cuisine (and wine) in the world. There is no shortage of great spots to check out, but here are a few of my favorite!
Il Corallo – Nestled on a small side street near Piazza Novona, this cozy restaurant is a must-try. While on my 10 day vacation, I visited three times! This was by far the best meal that I had while in Rome, and possibly one of the best meals of my life. I ordered the Fettucine Gnocchi and it was perfectly cheesy and delightful (I think it healed part of my soul). My fiance tried the steak and potatoes, and neither of us have ever had a more perfectly seasoned, perfectly cooked steak.
Napoletano’s – Located right next to the Pantheon, this restaurant has an amazing patio with views of the Pantheon! You simply have to try the bruschetta, it was fresh, delicious, and was served as a massive portion. You can never go wrong with sharing one of the authentic pizzas and a liter of wine!
All’Antico Vinaio – If you haven’t already heard of this sandwich shop, I’m so glad you have now. If you are looking for the BEST sandwich you have ever had, you have to try this place. For under $12, you can get a customized sandwich made with fresh homemade bread and locally sourced ingredients that will have you researching how to make this at home. A must try!
Sights and Attractions
1. The Colosseum & Roman Forum
Step into the arena where gladiators once battled, then stroll through the ruins of the Roman Empire’s heart. Buy a combo ticket to see both sites and avoid long lines.
2. The Vatican City
Home to the awe-inspiring St. Peter’s Basilica and the Sistine Chapel, Vatican City is a must. Book a morning tour to beat the crowds and marvel at Michelangelo’s famous ceiling.
3. Trevi Fountain
Throw a coin over your left shoulder to ensure your return to Rome. Arrive early or late in the evening for the best views without the selfie-stick chaos.
4. Pantheon
Still standing since 126 A.D., this architectural marvel is free to enter and impossible to forget. Visit during midday when the light beams through the oculus.
5. Trastevere Neighborhood
Wander through cobblestone alleys, discover hidden piazzas, and grab an aperitivo at one of the lively bars in this boho-chic Roman quarter.
Make it Memorable
When I traveled to Rome in 2022, one of the best activities we did was hiring a local photographer to capture great photos of my fiance and I. For only $200, our photographer showed us around some great, historical spots where we took PHENOMENAL photos! Try checking out Airbnb experiences for some great photography options.
